Fucosyllactose (specifically 2’-fucosyllactose or 2’-FL) is a type of human milk oligosaccharide (HMO)—a special sugar found naturally in human breast milk. While it is indigestible to humans, it plays a powerful role in nourishing the beneficial bacteria in the gut, especially Bifidobacteria. Today, 2’-FL can also be produced and added to supplements and functional foods to support gut health in children and adults.
How Fucosyllactose Supports Gut Balance and Dysbiosis
1. Feeds Good Bacteria
2’-FL acts as a prebiotic, meaning it feeds the good bacteria in your gut—particularly Bifidobacterium, a genus crucial for digestion, immune regulation, and gut lining integrity. In cases of gut dysbiosis (an imbalance of good and bad microbes), this helps tip the balance back toward a healthy microbiome.
2. Crowds Out Pathogens
Fucosyllactose binds to harmful bacteria, such as E. coli or Campylobacter, and prevents them from attaching to the gut lining. This helps reduce inflammation and infection risk during gut imbalance.
3. Strengthens the Gut Barrier
By encouraging healthy microbial activity, 2’-FL supports the production of short-chain fatty acids (like butyrate), which are critical for healing and maintaining the intestinal lining, especially important when leaky gut is present.
4. Regulates Immune Response
Because a large portion of the immune system resides in the gut, 2’-FL also helps modulate inflammatory responses, making it especially helpful for people with autoimmune issues or chronic gut inflammation.
Due to covid issues starting in 2020, I was diagnosed with gut dysbiosis. I recently discovered Fucosyllactose and the supplement I use is from Standard Process, and called Children's Immune. It normally takes about 12 weeks to re-establish the Bifidobacterium in the gut.

To test your Gut Health (this is a very thorough at-home stool sample test!) go to
this page and click on TESTS on the left. The Gut Health Test will be there. I get mine done 1-2 times a year!
